New Gatwick to New York route
31 July 2006
Delta Airlines is to start flying from Gatwick to New York.
Flights to the John F Kennedy International Airport will commence on 15 November - subject to approval from the US department of transportation.
The new flights come as United Airlines chooses to sell its rights for as New York-Heathrow route to focus on the Asian market.
Due to restrictions, Delta will switch from Heathrow to Gatwick when it takes up the service.
Jim Whitehurst, Delta's chief operating officer, claimed the switch from United to Delta would make crossing the Atlantic more competitive.
He said: 'Airline consumers in cities throughout the U.S. will benefit from the increased competition these flights will generate as they fill a critical gap in our international network, allowing customers to choose Delta for travel between New York and London.'
The route proves successful, Delta could add two further services between London and New York in the coming year.
