Two-thirds of Brits not confident behind the wheel abroad
31 July 2006
Two-thirds of British drivers admit to being not being confident in their driving skills abroad.
With many holidaymakers either taking their own cars or hiring vehicles abroad, the sources of most motoring unease have been highlighted.
The biggest reason for motorists feeling uncomfortable abroad is the confusing signs, followed by the disconcertion caused by driving on the wrong side of the road.
Unfamiliar roads, being uncertain over driving laws and dealing with roundabouts from the right-hand side of the road were all given by Brits as reasons to be flustered when driving abroad.
The survey also found around 60% of drivers were confused about the car insurance they need while abroad.
Phil Southgate, of Prudential, which carried out the survey, said: 'With almost two-thirds of drivers nervous about driving abroad, it is vital they double check what protection their policy will offer once they cross the Channel.
'Should they be involved in an accident some drivers may otherwise find themselves at a loss with only third party insurance despite having fire and theft or even fully comprehensive cover in the UK. We urge drivers to speak to their insurers so that they can set off to foreign climes with peace of mind.'
