US roads fixed
01 August 2006

Over £360m is to be spent repairing US highways in 31 states after hurricanes, storms and floods that have hit in recent years.

The US department of transportation has announced the package of emergency funds that will pay back states for work already done and finance future projects.

Acting transportation secretary Maria Cino said: 'These funds are crucial to restoring communities and getting local economies back on track.'

It is also hoped the work will encourage tourists to return to states affected by last year's exceptional weather conditions.

Work going ahead includes replacing damaged motorways and bridges, removing debris, and replacing signs, lighting and safety rails.

Florida has so far received £63m although further funds are expected and California has received £166m to pay for damage caused to roads in winter storms that struck last year.

Federal highway administrator Richard Capka said: 'Our priority after a natural disaster or emergency is repairing the transportation network so local communities can rebuild, businesses can reopen and people can resume their lives.'
