700th anniversary of the crowning of Robert the Bruce
01 August 2006

This year marks the 700th anniversary of the crowning of Robert the Bruce at St Andrew's Castle.

The exact date of the crowning is uncertain, although the castle is choosing to celebrate the historic moment this August with a series of recreations of the event.

St Andrew's Castle at the time was the residence of Bishop William Lamberton, whose forces fought alongside Bruce against the English.

Lamberton is generally believed to be the one who crowned Bruce in Scone in 1306 and said mass for the monarch directly after.

Nick Finnigan, Historic Scotland events manager, said: 'St Andrew's Castle has a remarkable history and is a great place to visit.

'As the stronghold of Bishop William Lamberton it makes an ideal place to commemorate some of the most important events in Scottish history.'

Events to commemorate the event at the castle, which is located near the town of St Andrews, include costumed performers re-enacting the crowning and showing off battle skills from the era.
