India's largest state Rajasthan is to establish 140 electronic tourist information kiosks.

The kiosks will provide information and photos about the state and major tourist attractions, such as palaces, forts and museums, as well maps and public transport timetables.

Rohit Kumar Singh, secretary of the state IT department, said: 'The kiosks would also highlight forthcoming events, festivals, fairs, approved tourist guides, restaurants and the event calendar of the tourism department.'

Information is set to be in Hindi, English and a few other European languages.

Last year around 1m foreign visitor headed to Rajasthan and it is hoped the kiosks the first project of its kind in India will encourage even more.

Rajasthan is currently trying to sell itself both for its cultural heritage with some palaces in the state converted into heritage hotels and adventure holidays, such as horse and camel safaris.
