Men go alone while women take their mates
02 August 2006

New research shows women of all ages prefer holidaying with friends than being alone.

However, as men get older they prefer to travel alone.

The poll by Portland Building society reveals 20% of young people aged between 18 and 24 enjoy travelling in single sex parties on holiday.

While women continue to enjoy holidays with friend throughout their lives, just 1% of men over 55 would consider such a break.

Furthermore, a fifth of male holidaymakers over 55 would prefer a holiday on their own.

Helen Shaw, the building society's communications manager, said: 'The difference in holiday preferences between the sexes is quite surprising, with a significant proportion of men preferring to holiday alone or considering a quiet place to relax the most important.

'Perhaps there may be some truth to the stereotype of "grumpy old men"?'
