Packing a surprise
04 August 2006

Travellers are being given some tips for packing.

The advice from Lonely Planet is aimed mostly at those heading off backpacking although it contains good tips for anyone.

With shoes being so bulky, travellers are advised to leave extra pairs at home, unless they are absolutely crucial.

The same advice is given for clothes while packing holidaymakers are advised to try to imagine whether they will really wear what they are going to take.

Neal Bedford, of Lonely Planet, said: "It's an old chestnut, but pack light.

"If you're going somewhere tropical, a few tops, shorts, smalls and socks will do. An ultra-small raincoat and hat will top off the outfit."

For those heading off the beaten track some unusual tips can double up to help cut down on luggage, for example, a sarong can be used as a picnic blanket, a wrap or a sheet.

Meanwhile a squash ball can be used as a plug in a sink or a bath.
