08 August 2006

New figures from airport operator BAA show 15m passengers flew from its airports over July.

This figure represents a 3.1% increase in the number of people flying.

The most popular region to fly to was Europe with 6.2m travellers flying to and from the continent.

The biggest area of growth was for long-haul destinations, not including Canada and the US, with 8.4% more people heading to destinations further afield.

The most popular airport remained Heathrow which welcomed 6.5m passengers while Stansted was the fastest growing, increasing passenger numbers by 9.9%.

Recent figures from the Association of European Airlines show the rise in Britons flying is matched across the Europe.

European airline traffic at the end of June was recorded as being 5% higher than a year ago.
