Holiday bags undervalued
08 August 2006
British holidaymakers are being warned they could be undervaluing their beach bags this year.
With electronic gadgets becoming commonplace, many Brits are finding travel insurance may not cover a bag which contains an MP3 player, digital camera, mobile phone and sometimes a laptop.
New research shows a typical beach bag contains £555 worth of goods and cash and 26% of British holidaymakers would leave their bag unguarded while going off for a dip.
Furthermore, only 7% of those surveyed could correctly value the contents of their holiday bags and 64% were out by 60%.
'Our evidence suggests that the simple beach bag, once just for towels and sunscreen, has become a glamorous fashion accessory packed with expensive items which make them rich pickings for opportunist thieves,' said Dawn McMullan, travel product manager at Norwich Union.
'Holidaymakers also appear to be severely underestimating the value of their belongings, which means that if they do become a victim of theft, they could find themselves under-insured.'
Tips to avoid becoming the victim of a costly theft include ditching expensive sunglasses and designer bags for high street versions and leaving gadgets behind in Blighty.
