Travellers getting older
08 August 2006

The demographics of the online travel market are changing, with a growing number of older people booking their holidays on the internet.

Research by analyst eMarketer found that baby boomers (those aged 45 to 60) are more and more likely to turn to the web to book holidays and breaks, with many choosing more adventurous holidays.

The company suggests that baby boomers are healthier, more affluent, more computer literate and more adventurous than previous generations.

Jeffrey Grau, eMarketer senior analyst, said: 'Online travel distributors and marketers who pay attention to these customers and design travel offers matching their interests and needs will reap rewards.'

The European online travel market was worth £18.6 billion last year.

The report, Online Travel Worldwide: A Mosaic of Separate Markets, states that the US is currently the world's largest market for online travel, with Europe around half its size and the Asia-Pacific region growing rapidly.

The online travel markets predicted to witness the fastest growth over the next few years are China, South Korea, India and Japan.
