Holiday club warning
09 August 2006

A new holiday scam has been highlighted that could cost victims thousands of pounds.

Council trading standards officials in Luton are warning potential holidaymakers to steer clear of holiday clubs based on free scratchcards.

The winning tickets - although trading standards officials point out all the tickets are 'winning' tickets claim to offer a free holiday and make assurances that timeshare deals are not being pushed.

As the clubs are not classed as timeshare companies, consumers have much less legal protection and could find themselves bound into contracts.

Sarah Hall, Luton trading standards service manager, said: 'Every year we hear of people who get home having bought a worthless deal they don't really want, face bills they can't pay and have a contract they cant get out of.

'Remember, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. And that applies even more so when you are signing a contract abroad.'

Ms Hall's advice is not to sign any contract, not to attend any presentation and to steer clear of any holiday clubs.

She added: 'If you had not considered a holiday club before being approached by the sales person, say no to the invitation to attend the presentation and avoid the problem altogether.'
