Mexico sports new attractions
11 August 2006

Mexico is trying to attract more visitors by showing off what sporting facilities the nation has.

It is estimated that tourists with sport on the mind spent around £520m in Mexico last year.

Mexico tourism secretary Rodolfo Elizondo said: 'Sports tourism plays an important role in the evolution of Mexico's tourism industry.

'As we continuously improve infrastructure and sports tourism offerings on both a local and regional level, Mexico's position as a sports tourism destination will be solidified.'

Sport in Mexico is not just limited to football and Lucha Libre wrestling.

On and in the water diving, surfing and fishing are popular, while golf is growing popularity as are facilities for triathletes.

Major sporting events that have taken place in Mexico recently have included a Rip Curl Pro surfing event and a PGA Champions Tour classic.

This August also sees the capital Mexico City hosting its annual international marathon.
