Airlines to 'change the way they do business'
11 August 2006

An aviation expert claims the terror alert will change the way airlines do business in future.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme airline industry consultant Jamie Bowden explained the reduction in the amount of hand luggage allowed on board planes to the bare minimum will hit airlines if the new rules are maintained.

He said: "If you look at the last couple of years most major airlines have moved towards letting passengers take on more baggage; they've been a lot more flexible.

"Airlines have invested millions of pounds over the last few years in things like laptop ports on board. Business passengers see using laptops now as part of their normal flight experience. If that's all changed I think airlines are going to have to rethink the way they do business."

Mr Bowden did, however, explain that it was uncertain how long the current restrictions will last, but the government could push for the new rules to become a standard.

"Now if that is the case, then it is dramatically going to change the way airlines do business," he said.
