Middle East starts flights to Damascus
11 August 2006

Middle East Airlines to start flying from Heathrow to the Syrian capital Damascus.

The Lebanese airline is taking on the route as its usual base, Beirut's Rafik Hariri Airport, has become a no-go zone for commercial aircraft during the current conflict as the runways have been destroyed.

Mohammad Hout, the airline's director general, said: 'This is a temporary measure and we hope to resume flights from Beirut once the fighting ends.'

The new schedule has been made possible after Middle East came to an agreement with Syrian authorities.

The London service will operate four times a week and the airline will also be flying to Frankfurt, Riyadh, Paris, Jeddah, Kuwait City and Dubai from Syria.

It is hoped the new service will help those foreigners and Lebanese people still stranded in Syria following the conflict.
