Flying still safest
11 August 2006

A security expert has spoken to calm the fears of people travelling by air that they are still choosing the safest form of transport.

Many holidaymakers may be tempted not to fly this summer following the heightened terror alert.

However, Dr Simon Bennett of the University of Leicester has spoken out to urge travellers to stick with flying.

He said: 'We urge people not to change travel plans.

'Flying is still the safest form of travel. If you do change your plans, the terrorists win.'

The security alert has brought more police to the UK's airports, but Dr Bennett still advises those flying away to be on the watch.

'In order to thwart terrorism we need the public's help, so be vigilant. If you recall seeing, or notice anything suspicious, inform the police or any airline or airport employee immediately,' he said.

Travellers are being advised to contact their airline before travelling, allow more time for their journey and be prepared for the new restrictions on carry-on luggage.
