Carry on luggage restrictions relaxed
14 August 2006

Passengers flying from the UK will now be allowed to take a single piece of hand luggage on board flights with them after security measures were relaxed.

The Department for Transport is now allowing passengers to fly with one bag 45cm long, 35cm wide and 16cm deep, including wheels, handles and side pockets.

Handbags and other smaller bags may also be taken on board but only within the main bag.

Restrictions still apply for liquids, with only baby milk or liquid baby food which must be tasted to prove its authenticity and prescription medicines being allowed.

Passengers are also being told to not take on items such as deodorant, hair gel, toothpaste or aerosols which are all classed as liquids.

Laptops and electrical items will now be allowed on board planes although must be removed from bags during searches. Pushchairs will be x-rayed and wheelchairs will undergo in more comprehensive searches.

The UK terrorism alert has now been down graded from 'critical' to 'severe'.
