Hurricane warning downgraded
14 August 2006

US meteorologists believe the threat of hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico is less then previously thought.

Experts from the national hurricane centre in Miami now predict that between 12 and 15 storms will occur during this year's hurricane season and around half becoming hurricanes.

So far half way through the six-month season, three tropical storms have been named although none cause any major impact and did not develop into hurricanes.

Conrad Lautenbacher, head of the US national oceanic and atmospheric administration, however, said the risk was still present.

He said: 'We are not off the hook by any means.

'This year's three named storms may pale in comparison to the record nine storms that formed through early August 2005, but conditions will be favourable for above-normal activity for the rest of this season.'

Last year, when hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea made headlines across the world, there were 28 named storms, 15 of which became hurricanes and four hit US mainland.
