Security alert ups online activity
14 August 2006

Travel and airline websites have seen record traffic following delays and cancellations after the increased security threat.

As passengers sought information about airports, airlines and alternative means of transport, many turned to the internet.

British Airways saw an increase in people on its website of 61%, the web monitoring firm Hitwise found.

Websites offering ferry and train tickets also saw increases in traffic as passengers facing cancellations looked elsewhere for travel.

The number of people heading to the website of the airport operator BAA led it to slow and eventually the firm choose to switch to a simpler format.

The alert also created a 50% surge in visitors to the BBC website and the UK security services website became unavailable due to the high volumes of tourists and members of the public seeking information.
