US winemakers take on luggage restrictions
16 August 2006
Winemakers in the US have come up with a novel idea for allowing customers to fly home with a bottle.
Following restrictions arising from the recent security alert no liquids are allowed in hand luggage, meaning bottles of wine usually taken on board by passengers to ensure their safety have to be put with checked in luggage or left behind.
To make sure they can still access a lucrative market, vintners in California are now offering customers storage boxes so wine can be safely transported in the luggage holds of aircraft.
Other wine producers are offering free shipping to costumers who buy over a certain number of bottles.
Phil Baily, owner of Baily Vineyards, told news channel KESQ3: 'If they want it shipped, we can handle the shipping.'
Travellers heading home from the US are not the only ones having to think twice about how to transport home wine.
Italy and France, both major wine producers, have also brought in restrictions on liquids being taken on board flights in hand luggage.
