Photographers' tips for new baggage rules
17 August 2006
Travellers flying with cameras are now having to place their equipment with checked-in luggage something many enthusiasts will not be keen to do.
Mason Resnick, of editor in chief of the Adorama Academy, which has published a guide for photographers planning to fly, said: 'The most restrictive carry-on rules currently affect UK travellers.
'Photographers who have invested thousands of dollars in their camera gear are concerned that if they are compelled, for security reasons, to check their equipment through, there's a risk that their cameras and lenses will be damaged or lost.'
He went on to give some tips to help amateur photographers keep their cameras safe.
Compact cameras left in luggage should be packed well and surrounded by soft clothes in the centre of the case.
Mr Resnick explained that photographers had to be ready to expect luggage not to be handled in the gentlest way and so prepare equipment suitably.
Travellers with larger cameras and lenses that cannot fit into baggage or are too delicate are advised to invest in an aluminium or plastic case with foam inserts.
Special insurance for expensive equipment is also advised.
