Tourism gold mine to open in Vietnam
17 August 2006

Vietnam is to open a gold mine as a tourist attraction.

In the central province of Quang Nam, the Bong Mieu mine which has now ceased its working life as a mine will reopen to visitors.

The first tours of the mine took place this month with local dignitaries and representatives of the media and travel industry getting a preview of what the attraction has on offer.

When the mine formally opens to visitors as a tourist attraction early next year, visitors will not only get the chance to experience what life was like for miners, but also see some of the gold that has been mined and learn about Bong Mieu's historical and local importance.

Mining for gold started at Bong Mieu over 1,000 years ago and during its history it has been controlled by the French, Chinese and Vietnamese.

It is hoped the mine will boost visitor numbers to the area.
