Boeing pulls the plug on inflight broadband
18 August 2006

Aerospace giant Boeing is to end its on-board wireless broadband service.

The firm decided to pull the plug on the Connexion by Boeing service after it found there was not enough interest from air passengers or demand for the service.

Boeing chief executive Jim McNerney said: "Regrettably, the market for this service has not materialised as had been expected."

Over the last six years that the service has only been taken up by five airlines.

It allows passengers to have high speed internet access at the cost of around £5.30 an hour, relying on a satellite connection.

The service will be gradually phased out over the next few months.

With online air services passing, the next challenge for airline and airplane manufacturers is to allow on-board mobile phone calls.
