European air security calm
21 August 2006

A travel expert has claimed that very little has changed on the continent, following the recent security alert.

Travel writer Simon Calder told BBC Two's Newsnight that while UK security has tightened greatly, in Europe the same restrictions have not hit.

He said: 'Everybody got terribly excited at Heathrow, at Gatwick, at the other British airports.

'If you're abroad, if you're flying around Europe, nothing has happened, nothing has changed.'

Meanwhile, transport secretary Alistair Darling is to review the current restrictions on items that can be taken on board planes.

He told BBC News 24 that it was important to strike the balance between security needs and allowing people to do business.

He said: 'I hope that in the next few days we can make sure that the system is manageable, is proportionate.'

He also dismissed suggestions that passengers would have to pay a security surcharge.
