Make-up banned to the USA
22 August 2006
Passengers flying to the US from UK airports are being warned to make sure they meet the new security regulations.
With the state of alert at 'severe', new regulations have been brought in, although airport operator BAA states 'this easing of restrictions is not a return to normal'.
The levels of publicity surround hand luggage restrictions means most people heading to airports to jet off are aware they are only allowed to take one bag measuring 35cm by 45cm by 16cm on board a plane with them.
Lighters, sharp items, cosmetics, toiletries, gels and liquids are also not allowed on planes in hand luggage.
However, all items purchased in the airside departure lounge are cleared to be taken on board, except on flights to the US.
For passengers heading to the US extra restrictions are in place.
A BAA spokesman explained: "Passengers will be subjected to secondary security searches at the gate.
"No toiletries or cosmetics purchased in the departure lounge will be allowed into the aircraft cabin and any drinks or liquid items must be consumed before boarding. Food, however, is allowed."
Baby food and prescription medicines continue to be allowed on board.
