Stansted bank holiday strike off
23 August 2006
A strike planned for Stansted this bank holiday weekend has been called off.
After three days of talks unions have come to a deal with the Swissport, which runs ground handling services at the Essex airport.
Swissport has offered staff a 11% pay rise over the next two years.
Tina Barbour, CEO of Swissport UK, said: 'It is certainly good news that industrial action has been avoided.
'The travelling public and our customer airlines have suffered in the last two weeks with all the changes in the security procedures and did not need any further disruption. We can now concentrate on offering an excellent level of service throughout the busy bank holiday weekend.'
Gary Pearce, of the union GMB, said: 'Swissport have done the right thing in making this offer and I think GMB members will recognise that.'
Strikes threatened to hit the Gatwick Express train service this weekend have also been called off when the union representing drivers suspended action to consider a new pay offer.
