Reasons behind fear of flying
23 August 2006

New research has uncovered the reason that 30% of travellers have for their fear of flying.

The work by Australia's Macquarie University Anxiety Research Unit has identified six key sources behind anxiety from flying which can range from mild concern to plain refusal to fly as in the case of Dutch footballer Dennis Bergkamp, who often drove across Europe for games rather than fly.

Dr Bryan Burke, who runs courses in getting people through their fears, said: 'People from all walks of life and all occupational groups suffer from fear of flying, and men can be as much affected as women.

'Even people who fly frequently may have a fear of flying, but manage to cope.'

The first cause of the fear of flying is claustrophobia with the felling of being trapped in some cases leading to panic attacks.

Other sources of fear include concerns of not being in control, previous traumatic events in planes and a lack of understanding about flying.

The research also highlighted fear of the unknown and accumulated stress as reason to be afraid of flying along with a combination of all the above.
