Singapore to be 'Paris of the east'
23 August 2006

The former prime minister of Singapore claims Singapore should become the 'Paris of South-east Asia' to compete with other tourist destinations.

Lee Kuan Yew, who led the country from 1959 to 1990 and remains an influential politician, told a conference that Singapore would have to build on current developments to attract more tourists, reports Travel Wire News.

He stated that Singapore 'is very orderly, safe, wholesome and very clean' but that it was not enough to draw in visitors.

The former PM said: 'We can't offer beaches, forests, lakes and the seaside like Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines.

'But we can be the Paris of South-east Asia.'

He added that new resorts that will open in Singapore will boost the entertainment industry in island city-state and jobs for Singaporeans.

Mr Lee said that 'people wine and dine till five in the morning' in places such as the Clarke Quay mall and entertainment complex, which stands on the banks of the Singapore river, and there should be more of such developments.
