24 August 2006
Britons are increasingly choosing the UK to spend a weekend away.
New figures from Flybe show the most popular destinations to fly to this Bank Holiday Monday will be in Britain.
The airline's chief commercial officer Mike Rutter said: "Because of its varied history and metropolitan culture Britain has so many fantastic things to see and do so it's great to see so many people taking the time to explore different areas of the country."
Although people are staying in Blighty they are heading for the further reaches with the Channel Islands and Scotland being the most popular destinations along with Exeter.
Figures from the English tourism board Enjoy England reveal bookings for country cottages are up by 10% from last year.
UK hotel short breaks have seen double digit increases in bookings.
An Enjoy England poll also found the countryside is want attracts Brits to stay in the UK with driving through the country in a sports car or shopping and eating out in the Shropshire village of Ludlow being named as the two most popular dream breaks, with Londoner particularly being drawn to rural tranquillity.
