Normal hand luggage in 'weeks, not months'
25 August 2006
Air passengers should soon be allowed normal hand luggage, a Department for Transport (DfT) official has said.
In an interview with the Times, the official said: 'We are keen to allow normal-size hand luggage as soon as possible.
'It should be possible before the end of September. It is going to be weeks, not months.'
He explained the current size restrictions would be lifted once security staff are able to cope with the current restrictions on gels and liquids.
Currently hand luggage is limited to one small bag measuring 45cm x 35cm x 16cm or around the size of a laptop bag.
It was not made clear if the increase in bag size will be step by step or if restrictions will be lifted in one go.
The DfT official made it clear the restriction on liquids and gels including make-up and toothpaste will remain, saying that it was impossible to 'uninvent' the threat.
