African tourism gets boost
25 August 2006
A project to help eradicate poverty by promoting tourism development in Africa has received a boost.
The World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) has signed an agreement with TourismAfrica to become its partner in promoting tourism in the least developed countries in the world.
UNWTO secretary-general Francesco Frangialli said: 'We want to continue to be on the frontline in creating jobs and fighting poverty in Africa which has so much potential as a tourism destination.
'We have seen in other regions of the world just how much tourism can help in economic development and certainly Africa has everything visitors want to experience - natural beauty, fascinating cultures, incredible wildlife, adventure travel, etc.'
By 2010 the number of visitors to Africa is expected to stand at 47m and by 2020 77m tourists could be heading to the continent.
TourismAfrica's main aims are to encourage financing and investment in tourism projects, to promote tourism destinations and activities in Africa and to preserve the region's unique heritage.
