Cambodia opens new airport
29 August 2006

This week a new airport has opened in Cambodia making it easier for visitors to head to the country's Angkor Wat temples.

It is hoped the Siem Reap International Airport in the Mekong Delta will help to bring tourists to one of the world's poorest nations and aid development.

Cambodian tourism minister Lay Prohas said at the official opening: 'The key to developing tourism is to have international airports.

'We have been waiting for this for so long, and we are proud to have it.'

He added: 'Hopefully, with better facilities, tourists will be persuaded to stay longer, and visit sights other than our World Heritage-listed Angkor temples.'

The number of tourists to head to Cambodia in the next year is expected to increase by 35 per cent and number as many as 3m by 2010 up from 1.4m last year.

Angkor Wat dates back to the 12th century when King Suryavarman II established it as a capital city and a religious centre.

The temple is surrounded by a 3.6km wall - demonstrating its massive size - however, throughout its complexes towers and walls are covered with ornate carvings.
