Pop and classical provide holiday soundtrack
30 August 2006
Britain's MP3 players are playing pop and classical music this summer on holiday.
A poll of what people listened to beside the pool found 29% opted for pop and 28% went for classical to relax. Some 23% chose rock.
The days of taking clunky personal stereo on holiday are now long gone as 76% of travellers listening to music on holiday took their MP3 players. Just 12% took radios and 8% took CD players.
The poll by Gatwick Express found that most travellers needed their music not for the beach, but for the journey.
Sixty-three per cent listened to music on the train heading to an airport or on the plane.
Only 7% were planning to take MP3 players to the beach and 3% were going to listen to music poolside.
Gareth Jones, commercial manager at Gatwick Express, said: 'This research was conducted to investigate the musical preferences of our passengers for possible introduction of music into our train environment.
'Although some of the obvious favourites were mentioned such as Cliff Richard's Summer Holiday and the Isley Brothers Summer Breeze, we had no idea that the top choice would be split between pop and classical.'
From the choice of songs and music given to passengers on the train service the top choices were Madonna's Holiday and Vivaldi's Four Seasons.
