Bali: World's best island
30 August 2006
Bali has been named the world's best island in a poll of 23,000 travellers.
The island picked up the title in the Travel & Leisure magazine annual awards for the fifth time and was named the best island in Asia for the seventh consecutive time.
Second and third places in the poll of the world's best islands were taken by Hawaii's Kauai and Maui islands.
Editor-in-chief of Travel & Leisure Nancy Novogrod said: "A powerful gauge of the interests and tastes of sophisticated travellers, the 2006 World's Best Awards reveal a preference for places farther away, smaller, and more unique than ever before."
The Indonesian island of Bali has long been known as a tropical paradise but the inclusion of Kauai and Maui in the list shows travellers are increasingly turning to nature.
The top five islands was completed by Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Island and Maine's Mount Desert Island,
Both islands also offer nature high up in their attractions, although Mount Desert Island is more of a retreat of the US's super-rich families and restaurants and shops on the island's main town reflect this well.
