Passengers confused over baggage restrictions
31 August 2006
Fifty-two per cent of UK air passengers are confused about the new baggage restrictions.
A poll by the International Air Passengers Association (IAPA) found most people accepted the need for the increased security measures and a third of passengers believed the measures were well-handled.
However, many travellers felt 'a sense of irritation' and saw 'too much posturing and not enough real security'.
Confusion over hand luggage restrictions in part stemmed as restrictions for flights heading into the UK are often more relaxed than British airports' standards.
Also the airport operator BAA has published adverts stating the rules for just Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted, leaving some passengers unsure what security will be at the UK's regional non-BAA airports.
IAPA spokesman Jonathan French said: 'With BAA placing adverts in the national press this week about what the rules are at Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted, this just begs the question for some travellers as to if, how and why other airports differ.
'There is also a nagging feeling that security at some overseas airports leaves something to be desired, and that this potentially leaves the "back door" open for flights into the UK. We feel that more clarity on all fronts is needed.'
