Saudi sites to be listed by Unesco
31 August 2006
Three heritage sites in Saudi Arabia are to be listed by Unesco.
Al-Diriya, Madaen Saleh and Jeddah have all received royal approval to be added to the Unesco list of world heritage sites.
Jeddah is now one of Saudi Arabia's main ports but the historic old town and surrounding area are increasing being put under threat from development.
Recently a body chaired by the Prince Abdul Majeed Bin Abdul Aziz, Emir of Makkah Region had been established to find ways to guarantee the survival of the old town.
Madaen Saleh, in the Al-Ula area of the country, was created by the Nabateans, the same people who established Petra in Jordan.
The site includes 131 tombs dating back 2,000 years carved into sandstone cliff faces.
Work to preserve the archaeological finds of Al-Diriya has also recently commenced.
As well as helping to protect the areas, the Unesco listing will also highlight the sites to tourists from around the world.
