Oktoberfest named among best festivals in North America

San Francisco's Oktoberfest by the Bay has been named one of the best autumn festivals in North America by the Society of American Travel Writers.
California's version of the German beer festival runs from 12 to 15 October and attracts more than 40,000 revellers.
German food, bands and beer are all brought in from Munich to recreate the feel of the original for what is thought to be the largest Oktoberfest west of the Mississippi River.
The ten top fall festivals are dominated by nature and food with Nebraska's Applejack Festival (16 and 17 September), the Keen Pumpkin Festival in New Hampshire (21 October), Wisconsin's 45th Annual Bayfield Apple Festival (6 to 8 October) and the Nova Scotia Pumpkin People Festival (throughout October) all making the list.
Other events include the Woolly Worm Festival in North Carolina.
The woolly worm a caterpillar used to predict how cold winter will be attracts around 20,000 visitors to the mountain town of Banner Elk along the Blue Ridge Parkway on 21 and 22 October.
As well as the main festival of music, food and fun the inns and lodges of nearby villages all take part, along with 1,000 woolly worms.
