Terror alert hits BA for £40m
06 September 2006

Last month's terror alert cost British Airways £40m.

The airline revealed the between 10 and 17 August 1,280 flights were cancelled, but overall traffic was up for the month.

Lost revenue and increased costs of hotel accommodation, catering and baggage repatriation because of the disruptions ended up costing the airline £40m.

However, passenger numbers are now only marginally affected by the terror alert.

A BA spokesman said: 'Since the disruption there has been some impact on forward bookings.

'The overall level of bookings has returned to levels experienced last year, but is still weaker than the trend of the past few months.'

Currently the restrictions on hand luggage remain with bags measuring 45cm by 35cm by 16cm only being allowed on board flights.

Passengers are still not allowed to take some types of food, but vegetables, sandwiches, crisps, fruit and other solid food are allowed along with baby milk and food. Cosmetics and other liquids or gels are not allowed on board.
