Beijing told to smile
06 September 2006
Organisers of the 2008 Beijing Olympics are calling on the city's residents to smile.
The smiling campaign is a bid to make the city more attractive to visitors and forms part of an attempt to get residents to improve their manners.
Liu Jian, member of the organising committee, said: 'We hope Beijing residents will join in the smile campaign to turn the city into a city of smile.
'For many people who will not be volunteers, they are expected to show their good manners and do what they can to make the city a better place.'
Over 1m guides entitled General Textbook on Civility and Propriety are to be distributed to make residents aware of how bad manners such as queue jumping and dropping litter can reflect on visitors' perceptions of the Chinese capital.
During the Olympics around 250,000 foreign tourists are expected to head to the Chinese city along with 2m domestic visitors.
To aid spectators and competitors 100,000 volunteers are to be recruited to help the games run smoothly.
