Record rates of tourists to Singapore
06 September 2006

July saw 913,000 tourists head to Singapore, a record for the island city-state.

In the first half of the year alone some 4.7m tourists headed to Singapore from around the world both from nearby countries, such as Korea, China and Japan, and Europe and the US.

Not only were more travellers heading to Singapore, they were also staying for longer.

Lim Neo Chian, head of the Singapore Tourism Board, said: 'The first half of 2006 has been very positive for the tourism industry.

'Each month this year has shown a record number of visitor arrivals over the same months in previous years.'

Mr Lim went on to say that he expected 9.4m people to visit Singapore in 2006 an increase of over 1m from two years ago.

This year Singapore has been trying to encourage more tourists to visit by promoting the city as a shopping destination and also to younger people with concerts from Coldplay, Robbie Williams and Westlife.
