Mauritius popularity picks up
06 September 2006

This year has seen the number of Britons heading to Mauritius increase by 6%.

The island nation 900km east of Madagascar and 4,000km south-west of India saw a total of 360,137 tourists come to its shores in the first half of 2006 an increase of just over 3%, although European visitor numbers were unchanged.

Six per cent of all tourists to Mauritius were from Britain.

The biggest growth in visitor numbers came from Italy with almost 70% more Italian tourists heading to Mauritius in the first half of the year while the number of French visitors fell by nearly 20%.

Mauritius's position in the India Ocean means it attracts visitors from around the world to its picturesque shores and beaches resulting in its cosmopolitan history, being controlled by the Portuguese, French and British at different times, being continued to the present day.

Tourists headed to the island from China, Japan, South Africa, Kenya, Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates among others.
