'Superjumbo' has first full passenger flight
06 September 2006
The world's largest ever passenger aeroplane, the Airbus A380, has had its first flight with passengers.
The superjumbo took off from Blagnac International Airport in Toulouse with 474 passengers on board all Airbus employees to test the cabin conditions for passengers.
Facilities such as toilets, meals, seats, in-flight entertainment and air conditioning are being tested to ensure the aeroplane can not only carry large numbers of passengers, but carry them in comfort.
The plane is capable of carrying a total of 800 passengers at once in the all-economy class configuration, although most airlines are expected to fly with a mix of first class, business class and economy class with around 550 people on board.
So far 16 airlines, including Air France, Singapore Airlines, and Virgin Atlantic, have ordered a total of 159 Airbus A380s.
The first batch of test flights will take the on board guinea pigs to Spain, the UK, Germany, Norway and the Canary Islands.
