Airlines stand up against liquid ban
07 September 2006

The ban on liquids in hand luggage has been described as 'unrealistic' by European airlines.

Francoise Humbert, spokesperson for the Association of European Airlines, told a meeting of EU security experts that the ban on all liquids and gels, such as toothpaste, contact lens solution and hair wax, should not continue indefinitely.

She said: "Prohibiting all liquids on board we see as unrealistic.

"People need to have something to travel overnight with them. You might need to travel with medication, liquid medication, so this kind of thing should be allowed."

"We have to strike the right balance," she added.

Ms Humbert's sentiments were echoed by EU justice and security commissioner Franco Frattini.

He said: 'It's much better in my personal view to focus on detection of liquid explosives rather than generically banning all liquid materials.'

Meanwhile the UK government has not revealed when the restrictions on hand luggage size and liquids will be lifted, although it is thought a gradual lifting of the rules will take place in the coming months.
