Fewer Brits cross the Atlantic

The number of British travellers crossing the Atlantic and heading to Canada and the US has fallen.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reveal over the last 12 months to July 2006, 4.7m UK citizens travelled to North America a fall of 6%.

The data suggests that Brits are increasingly turning their backs on the US and Canada and finding newer destinations to head to, as the total number of foreign visits rose 3% to 67.7m.

The most popular destination by far was Western Europe with 50.7m trips - an increase of 1%.

The biggest growth was to other destinations in the world, as Brits become more adventurous with their choice of breaks and are prepared to travel further.

Journey to other destinations in the world rose by 13% and numbered 12.3m.

The ONS research also looked at the number of tourists and visitors heading to Britain. In total there were 31 million visits to the UK.
