Scottish church hailed as top attraction
11 September 2006

Tourism bosses in Scotland have heaped praise on an historic church in East Lothian.

Delegates from VisitScotland visited St Mary's Parish Church in Haddington last week and praised it as one of the region's top tourist attractions.

The picturesque church, which is one of the biggest parish churches in the Lothians, was awarded three-star visitor status by the VisitScotland chiefs, who were impressed by the work which has been carried out on the attraction to make it accessible to tourists.

Built in 1462, the church has become a popular attraction in part due to its medieval architecture. So far this year, over 3,000 visitors have already been to see the church since its annual opening season began in May.

St Mary's will close on September 30 for the winter months, before reopening once again next May.

Ben Carter, area director for VisitScotland, commented: 'I'm delighted that St Mary's Parish Church has been rewarded for all the hard work and effort that has gone into making it a great, quality attraction for East Lothian.'

Mr Carter added: 'Set in a beautiful location and with a fascinating history, St Mary's Parish Church is a real asset to the area.'
