Iran aims to boost tourism
12 September 2006

Iranian officials yesterday sought to persuade neighbouring countries to cooperate in boosting tourism between Islamic states.

The proposals were made at a meeting of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, an association of 56 Islamic states that aims to promote ties between Muslim countries.

The chief of Iran's delegation, Mohammad Sharif Malekzadeh, put forward a broad ranging set of proposals aimed at boosting tourism in the region.

Iran has a number of its own initiatives underway, including a tribal tourism programme aimed at showcasing and improving the lives of nomadic tribes.

The country also has a number of beach resorts in the Persian Gulf that it wants to promote.

Among a raft of other measures Mr Malekzadeh proposed the creation of national tourist committees to market tourism in Islamic states, and the creation of an international Islamic tourism database, for the use of member states.
