The tiny principality of Monaco and its city Monte Carlo have been named the safest destination in the world by a leading travel expert.

The European state, famous for its casinos, motor racing and glamour, has a population of just over 32,000 people and Monte Carlo is one of its 5 main areas, with around one police officer for every 100 residents and extensive surveillance systems.

Laura McKenzie has produced a list of the world's five safest travel destinations in light of current concerns about safety and crime.

'At a time when safety has become a key consideration in the planning of a vacation, deciding where to go is an even more important decision,' Ms McKenzie said. 'While no one can guarantee a hazard free trip, this list showcases five destinations with low crime rates, clean food and water, minimal to non-existent terrorist threats and excellent medical services.'

Other destinations on the list include New Zealand at 2, a popular location for extreme sports and outdoor enthusiasts, with excellent medical facilities and low crime rates, and the island nation of Malta at 3, with its safe and 'pristine' alleyways and no modern day terrorist threats.

At 4 in the list, the travel specialist placed Switzerland, notoriously neutral in world affairs, with low crime and excellent public services, while Singapore rounded off the top 5 because of its strict laws, cleanliness and efficient infrastructure.

Home to the rich and famous, Monte Carlo has a particularly low crime rate, stunning beaches and a charming and compact city complete with excellent restaurants, bars and shops. Ms McKenzie particularly highlighted the safety of strolling around Monaco's streets at night and its fine and hygienic food.
