World's biggest fishing festival in Brazil
14 September 2006
The biggest river fishing festival on the planet takes place in Brazil, South America, each September.
The Festival Internacional de Pesca (the International Fishing Festival) 2006 runs from 16-24 September in the city of Caceres.
Located in the state of Mato Grosso, on the banks of the Paraguai River, Caceres is a lively, bustling city with an economy based around cattle ranching and fishing.
The first International Fishing Festival took place in 1980, as a small local fishing festival, and it has grown larger each year since, now attracting around 200,000 tourists to Caceres annually.
Visitors flock to the city each autumn for the fishing competitions, performances, parties, fireworks display and the annual Boat Show and Arts and Crafts Fair. Excellent local dishes are on sale throughout the city during the week and a central stage takes pride of place in the Praca Barao do Rio Branco.
Both junior and adult fishing contests are held on the banks of the River Paraguai and the festival also promotes local culture and heritage and eco-tourism.
