Ghana promotes itself as tourist haven
15 September 2006

Ghana has launched an extensive new campaign aimed at attracting tourists to the country.

The small West African nation put on an impressive display at TourismAfrica 2006 in Geneva, Africast reports.

Ghana Tourist Board executive director, Martin Mireku, highlighted the relative political stability the country is currently experiencing, pointing out its excellent position to explore the rest of West Africa.

'We have the potentials and we'd continue to develop strategies to meet the world's tourism needs,' he told delegates.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency later, Mr Mireku stated that he wanted to see the 'prohibitive' cost of air travel to Ghana fall for passengers from Europe and North America.

Earlier this month, the tourist agency boss urged hotel, restaurant and bar owners to keep standards of hygiene and cleanliness high and warned that the number of routine inspections carried out would rise from once a year to twice a year.

Ghana is the 10th most popular African country with tourists, with friendly people, stunning beaches and stunning national parks teeming with wildlife.

The country is currently preparing from increased tourism as a result of the CAN 2008 football tournament and the forthcoming 50th anniversary of independence celebrations next year.
