Bangkok's new airport set to open
15 September 2006

A new international airport has opened to the public in the Thai capital Bangkok.

The new transport hub has initially opened for just a few domestic and international flights, but it is gearing up to assume the bulk of traffic from Don Muang airport.

The grand opening of Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi international airport will take place on September 28th and the new facility will replace the current crowded and old airport and is expected to accommodate around 45 million passengers per year.

Passengers travelling on the first flights to and from the airport experienced slight delays but seemed pleased with the gleaming new terminals. The eagerly awaited new airport has been in the planning stages for 40 years, but has suffered major delays and setbacks.

Flights operated by airlines Thai Airways and Jetstar were some of the first to take off on Friday and some people were forced to wait following problems with a check-in counter processing passengers travelling on internal flights to the city of Phitsanulok.

All passengers travelling to and from Bangkok over the next few weeks are advised to check their tickets carefully for the BKK or NBK airport codes for Don Muang and Suvarnabhumi respectively.
