World's busiest route named
15 September 2006

The busiest route in the world has been named as that between the Spanish cities of Barcelona and Madrid.

A list of the top ten busiest routes in the world by transport information firm OAG places last year's number one between Sao Paulo Congonhas and Rio de Janeiro Santos Dumont in Brazil at number two, according to Travel Daily News.

Based on the number of flights operating on routes each week, the only new entry to the OAG list for 2006 was Mumbai to Delhi in India. In third place on the list was Melbourne to Sydney, Australia, followed by the route between the Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta and Surabaya in Indonesia and Honolulu and Kahului in Hawaii.

A total of six of the top ten busiest routes in the world are between destinations in Asia, while North America accounts for a total of seven of the top ten low cost carrier routes worldwide, including routes between Denver and Las Vegas, and Las Vegas and Los Angeles.

Duncan Alexander, managing director of Business Development at OAG, said: "The picture on low cost routes is somewhat more dynamic, showing three new routes with the highest weekly frequencies, two of which involve Denver Airport."

Recent data from OAG suggests that air traffic between Europe and the Middle East is continuing to rise, with traffic growth at ten per cent for September 2006 and a growing number of low cost flights and budget carriers in operation in the Middle East.
